I fear that it might be over run by microscopic crustacians. Are you running Vista? If so it could be that your computer simply isn't made (i.e. fully compatable) for that most gimmicky operating system.

If you got a machine that was running Vista soon after it was released there is a chance that it cannot run the OS properly- it'll meet the requirements but not work properly. Maybe you should up[down]grade to XP. Vista loves to play tricks on users, works fine for me though because my computers really, really good!
